How to cast a "write-in" vote on Election Day

General Information:

These instructions apply to lever-type machines. Almost all New Yorkers will be using these to vote. Bring your own pencil/pen in case the one in the booth is unusable. But don't bring in a pen or pencil with a candidate's name on it. Those are prohibited inside the 100 ft. electioneering marker.

Write-ins are done inside the voting booth, not at a separate table.

At the upper-left top of the voting machine, there is a sign "Columns for Write-in Votes" with an arrow pointing to the write-in slots across the top of the machine. See below to see a rough sample of a ballot.

Note that all ballots are unique and will only have choices for your district.
Each write-in slot has a number which matches the number of the office column below.
There should be a pencil/pen next to the sign.

Write-in Voting is as easy as "1-2-3"!

  1. Locate the write-in slot for the office (column) you want to write-in (for example, NY Assembly or Senate).
  2. Open the slot of the desired column by pushing the cover upwards.
  3. Write-in your choice for that office (for example, "Change Now") on the paper in the slot window.

Reminders:

  • Write legibly
  • Once the write-in slot is opened, voting by lever is impossible for that particular column (office). No other vote is affected.
  • The state senate and state assembly races are the most appropriate choices for write-in votes supporting reform of the state legislature.
  • It is not necessary to close a write-in slot before leaving the voting booth; it will close automatically when the red lever is pulled back.

Need assistance - You can ask an Election Inspector to show you how to do a write-in before going into the voting booth. Inspectors cannot offer assistance without being asked, to avoid the appearance of supporting a write-in candidate.

Once inside, if you need assistance, do not use the red lever to open the curtain, it will prematurely register your vote, instead, poke your head outside the curtain.

Don't just send them back to Albany, send them back
with a specific mission, Change Now!

Make your vote count for more this year.
